Sound Editor: How-to
Thanks for agreeing to be a Guys Read Sound Editor. Now let’s get started!
1. The program we use for sound editing is called Audacity. It is already loaded on the laptops we use for Guys Read.
2. It will take a while for the other Guys Read guys to make their audio files, so in the meantime, you can practice.
3. First, complete this Audacity Tutorial. It has a number of great videos that show you just what to do. The Audacity site also recommends some tutorials.
4. Next, practice editing the Bloomington Public Library’s booktalk podcast. I have downloaded it to a flash drive so see me to get it. Be creative–this is just practice so you can try out all kind of effects.
5. The REAL THING: OK, so other Guys Read guys have done their jobs and you now have some files to edit. First, make a list or draw a diagram showing all the different files to be added together (e.g. opening theme – host tag line – blast effect – teaser – segment introduction – first booktalk – bell sound effect). Let Mrs. Glatt double-check it.
6. BEFORE you edit any files: Make a copy of each file and rename it to working_filename. (e.g. booktalk1.wav becomes working_booktalk1.wav). That way, if you make a mistake the original file remains intact.
7. Use what you learned in the tutorials to edit files individually and then put them together into one gigantic podcast! Actually, this should probably be steps 7-37, but you get the idea.
YIKES! When you’re done you have created a Guys Read podcast for everyone to enjoy!
